Oasis Risk Explorer is a new open-source risk modelling tool designed to accelerate risk understanding for non-expert users. It has been funded by member companies of the Insurance Development Forum and is provided for public good.
The tool provides an introduction to climate and disaster risk assessment and pricing using methodologies common in the insurance sector. It introduces the concept of developing risk metrics through combining:
A Hazard of concern (in this case Tropical Cyclone)
Data describing the exposed asset or population, known as the Exposure
A ratio of possible damage or loss, known as Vulnerability
The resulting metrics can be used to guide investment or insurance decisions, and therefore build the confidence necessary to move finance.
This video gives a brief tour of the tool, which will shortly be available to anyone on an open-source basis.
